Adar Poonawala (born 14 January 1981) is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Serum Institute of India. His father, Dr. Founded in 1966 by Cyrus Poonawala, it is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer by number of doses as of 2017.

Poonawala joined the Serum of India in 2001 after graduating from Westminster University in London. Then exporting its products to 35 countries, Poovala focused on the company’s international market on obtaining licensed and pre-qualified by the World Health Organization to supply to UN agencies, including UNF and Pahlo. As of 2015, the company now exports its products to more than 140 countries around the world, with 85 percent of its revenue coming from abroad.

In 2011, he became the CEO of Serum Institute with full control of the company’s day-to-day operations. In 2012, he played a major role in the acquisition of Bilthoven Biologicals, a Dutch government vaccine manufacturer. Poonawala is also a board member of the GAVI Alliance, a global vaccination alliance.

In his recent interview with Julia Chatterly ( Reporter CNN New York ) , he told about his company’s global mission to provide vaccine to all by producing 1 billion COVID-19 vaccines doses out of which 50% will be provided to the Indian government and and the other 50% will be distributed through the world .

Apart from being an entrepreneur and a multibillionare businessman , he’s also a philanthropist as he was awarded the philanthropist of the year by GQ Magazine in 2016 . As for his education he did his schooling from The Bishop’s School (Pune) and then at the St Edmund’s School Canterbury .

His current aim is to take this company to a 100 billion dollar mark . To reach that goal the company built worlds largest vaccine manufacturing in 2019 and has spent about Rs 3000 crore . Recently , Adar poonawalla reduced the cost of the COVID-19 vaccine from Rs400 to Rs300 , which shows his philanthropic attitude towards the humanity .
